Sinus Augmentation

CREATING A FIRM FOUNDATION FOR IMPLANTS

The maxillary sinuses are hollow cavities at the roof of the upper jawbone, close to where the roots of the upper teeth end. If a patient’s upper teeth are missing, the bone separating the maxillary sinuses from the teeth often isn’t substantial enough to place implants. The bone may also be insubstantial due to disease. For this reason, patients who need implants may require sinus grafting to accommodate the implants.

Your Sinus Augmentation Procedure

Typically, a sinus augmentation procedure involves pushing the membrane lining the sinus upward, allowing bone grafting material to be placed against the existing bone and below the sinus membrane. The new material bonds with your jawbone as it heals. Once healing is complete, dental implants can be placed into the bone. In some cases, depending on how much original bone is available, the implant can be placed immediately following the sinus augmentation.

Patients receive customized local anesthesia and may request conscious sedation during the procedure to guarantee their comfort.
