Why Periodontics?

Focus on Foundational Health

Periodontics focuses specifically on the foundation for dental health: gums and bones. When you build and maintain a strong foundation, you are less likely to develop problems later on. Periodontists specialize in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment modalities all aimed to preserve function and aesthetics. The importance of these can not be undermined when considering self-confidence and comfort in our day to day interactions.

As we age, our health declines to some extent inevitably. It has been accepted in recent years the periodontal health and systemic health connection. This is all based upon our immune response and inflammation. For this reason alone, a screening at some point in life could reveal subtle changes with an opportunity to halt the process of periodontal destruction.

Why Do I Need to See a Specialist?

While general dentists have training in detecting periodontal conditions, a referral is often made to a periodontist to seek further direction for your specific treatment needs. Periodontists undergo three additional years of training focused upon fundamentals and current technologies available for treatment of periodontal disease. In addition, emphasis is placed on placement, maintenance and repair of dental implants. Together with your dentist, we can create a treatment plan that’s ideal for you.
